Rubicon Farm

Located on the outskirts of the golfing resort of Pinehurst, the 200-year-old Rubicon Farm has been re-imagined by Elizabeth and Russell Sugg who in 2005 sought a historical property as a project for restoration. The 1820 Black-Cole House, listed on the National Register of Historical Places, was situated on 64 acres on what remained of an approximately 2000-acre long leaf pine operation dating back to the early 1800s. The couple contacted the NC Forestry Service for a survey and, based on their recommendations, harvested the existing mixed hardwood/pine trees. Through the WHIP program the Sugg family reforested approximately 33 acres, and 20 years later the long leaf pines have matured to the point of generating income from pine straw production. In addition to the pine straw operation, the couple built an event space nestled between two 19th century outbuildings where they host all-inclusive elopements and weddings, curated events and retreats.
