A.L. Baucom Family Farms’ history goes back over 100 years and three generations. In 1901 Emanuel and Ola Baucom purchased the original home place. Through the years, they worked to bring the land into production and raise their children. We currently grow corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and peanuts. We also grow strawberries and other produce for Piedmont Produce General Store. Our operation covers 9,000 acres in both North and South Carolina. We utilize no-till conservation planting methods to protect and enhance the land that we farm.

Allen Powell Memorial Collard Patch offers harvest your own yellow cabbage collards, turnip greens and mustard greens. After nearly 20 years in operation, John Powell is now carrying on his late father’s love of farming . This farm opens late October and runs through Thanksgiving.

Benjamin Vineyards is a Pick-Your-Own vineyard specializing in Southern Muscadine varieties. We open Labor Day weekend for picking and remain open on weekends through October as long as there are grapes to harvest. We grow 12 different varieties of muscadine grapes. The “fresh eating” varieties are: Tara, Scarlet, Ison, Summit, Nesbit, Jumbo, Sweet Jenny, Fry, and Supreme. The wine and juice varieties are Noble, Hunt, Carlos, Scuppernong, and Magnolia. We have ample parking and a shaded picnic grove.

This is our 16th year growing SHIITAKE mushrooms.  We grow them outdoors on natural logs following a 3,000 year old technique.  We have sold over 9 TONS of shiitake mushrooms.  Once inocculated with mushroom spawn the logs will continue to produce for 5 to 10 years.  We currently have 13,500 logs stacked over a 3 acre spot in the deep, dark and damp woods.  These mushroom grow between 35 and 85 degrees and are dormant in the summer months.  However we almost always have dried mushrooms available year round.  These rehydrate readily and plump back up like fresh. Our trees start as tiny seedlings on Roan Mountain. We hand plant them in beds and then transplant them again by hand to our slopes a year or two later. The Christmas Tree Patch produces high quality choose and cut Leyland Cypress, Virginia Pine, Carolina Sapphire, and Blue Ice Juniper Christmas Trees for customers in central NC. Hand made wreaths and tree stands are also available. Customers may cut their own tree with hand saws provided. Trees are cleaned with a tree shaker, netted, and loaded for our customers.
