Christmas Tree Farm Magic

Dec 11, 2025

Christmas is a season of warm lights, sparkling décor, and comforting traditions like carols, snow globes, and mugs of hot cocoa. One of the most unforgettable ways to elevate your holiday spirit is by visiting a Christmas tree farm, especially in North Carolina, where the mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop for holiday magic.

North Carolina is a leader in Christmas tree production, ranking second in the nation. More than 50 million Fraser Firs grow on over 38,000 acres across the state’s western counties. These trees aren’t just beautiful; they’re iconic. The Fraser Fir, which accounts for more than 90 percent of all Christmas trees grown in North Carolina, is prized for its strong branches, rich fragrance, and excellent needle retention. It has been named the “Nation’s Best Christmas Tree” multiple times and has adorned the White House more than a dozen times.

Visiting a mountaintop Christmas tree farm in North Carolina means more than picking out a tree. It’s stepping into a region that fuels holiday traditions across the country.

During our visit to Clawson’s Christmas Tree Farm, we realized what we’d been missing by not making this a yearly tradition. Tree lots and markets have their own charm, but standing on a sweeping mountain ridge surrounded by rows of evergreens glistening in the cool air is its own kind of magic.

We hopped on a hayride with our pup and wound through the hillside until we found “the one,” our perfect tree. Hot cocoa warmed our hands as expert tree balers wrapped our Fraser Fir to take home. Around us, families laughed, explored, and made their own memories. We wandered up the hill to meet donkeys, sheep, and goats, each eager for a pat or scratch. It felt like stepping into a snow globe.

Nearby farms in Boone offer equally enchanting experiences. As we drove, we passed places like C & J Christmas Trees, Appalachian Christmas Mountain Farms, and Appalachian Evergreens Inc. Each one, listed on Visit NC Farms, offers its own flavor of mountain magic. Choosing was the hardest part because you truly can’t go wrong.

Back home, unwrapping our tree felt like unpacking a piece of the mountaintop. Fraser Firs, with their sturdy limbs, held all our treasured ornaments perfectly. Among them were dried flower baubles from Barrier Farms and Church Creek Farms, and a sweet alpaca ornament from Farm and Fleece Alpaca Ranch collected over the years.

While Fraser Firs are North Carolina’s shining stars, farms and lots across the state also grow white pine, Virginia pine, and Eastern red cedar. Each variety offers unique textures, fragrances, and decorating strengths. Whether you prefer the soft, wispy needles of a white pine or the classic aroma of an Eastern red cedar, there’s a tree for every home and tradition.

If you’ve never ventured to a North Carolina Christmas tree farm, or if it’s been a while, we hope you’ll consider mixing things up this year. Wander the mountains. Find your perfect fir. Sip cocoa in the crisp air and let the moment slow down.

Bring home a piece of the mountains this Christmas and let the magic unfold for you and your whole family.
